Youth lacrosse stick length by division

USA Lacrosse names divisions 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U. We match an age to the division with that number, but your league decides which division a player is in, so ask it first. Lengths are overall crosse length in inches.

What the rule books do and do not say

The boys' book prints a length range for every division. The girls' book prints no field-player length: it allows a small stick at 6U to 10U and points 12U and 14U to the NFHS rules, which we did not read. It does print a goalkeeper's crosse length: 35 1/2 to 52 inches. This is the rule, not a fit test: neither USA Lacrosse book gives a height-to-stick chart.

How to use it, in 3 steps

  1. Find the division

Ask your league which division the player is in (6U, 8U, 10U, 12U or 14U). Then enter the age that matches it.

  2. Read the length range

Boys: pick short stick, long pole or goalkeeper for the position. Girls: check the stick rule for the division and the league's equipment list.

  3. Check the stick before you buy

Look for the overall length on the product page and compare it with the range. Ask the coach whether the league wants a certified head.

Frequently asked questions

How do I size a lacrosse stick?

Start from the rules: USA Lacrosse's boys' youth book lists a length range for each division and position, so choose a stick inside the range for your division. Neither USA Lacrosse book gives a body-height test for lacrosse sticks, so we do not give one.

What is the standard size of a lacrosse stick?

For boys, USA Lacrosse's equipment guide lists a short crosse of 40 to 42 inches and a long crosse of 52 to 72 inches. Younger divisions have allowances for shorter sticks: field players may use 37 to 42 inches at 6U to 10U.

What size lacrosse stick for a 9 year old?

If the league puts a 9-year-old in 10U, the boys' book lists a field-player stick of 37 to 42 inches and a long pole of 47 to 54 inches. Girls in 10U may use a small stick with a modified pocket. Ask your league which division applies.

What sizes do lacrosse sticks come in?

In USA Lacrosse's boys' youth rules: field players 37 to 42 inches at 6U to 10U, 40 to 42 inches at 12U and 40 to 72 inches at 14U; long poles 47 to 54 inches at 10U and 52 to 72 inches at 12U and 14U; goalkeepers 37 to 54 inches at 10U and under and 40 to 72 inches at 12U and up.

What is a good lacrosse stick for a 6-year-old girl?

USA Lacrosse's girls' book allows a small stick at 6U and 8U with no pocket limits, and says the stick for 6U, 8U and 10U can meet either the boys' or the girls' molded head requirements. It names no length, so check the length on the product page and ask the league.
